COMPARE THE RODDERS

The Rodder on the right has the guide rollers welded to the top of the frame.  The Rodder on the left has the Guide Rollers on a removal bracket located at the bottom of the frame.

The first rule of Rodding is to have the rod as straight as possible from the Rodder to the conduit. The larger the bend in the rod, the greater coefficient of friction that is applied to the rod as it enters the conduit, making it a much harder push.

UNSAFE RODDER

The Rodder on the Left has the brake handle on the opposite side of the Rodder that the Operator is Rodding on.  If the Rod spools from the Reel out of control the Operator is placed in danger while trying to apply the brake.  There have been numerous instances where the rod has spooled out of control with near fatal consequences.   A Rodder with the Brake Handle on the opposite side that the Operator Rods is an Unsafe Design and should not be used.  As a business owner, you must meet the WHS requirements set out in the acts and regulations in your state or territory. Underground Service Location – Traceable Rodders.

Undergound Service Location has become an absolute necessity for the protection of Underground Assests.   Thousands of dollars are invested purchasing high quality Transmitters and Locating Equipment for cable detection.  In numerous cases, that equipment is then connected to poorly designed Traceable Rodders.

Most manufacturers and suppliers of Traceable Rodders fail to understand the principals of Tracing and the importance of Current Flow.

Three of the main defects are as follows:

  1. Traceable Rodders with the trace wire connected to the Rodder Frame allows the current to short circuit to the earth stake with minimal current travelling down the trace wire. Current travels in the least line of resistance.
  2. Trace rod with small diameter trace wires or excess rod length creates and limits  high resistance and limit current flow. Correct current flow provides a high degree of location accuracy and a higher signal strength at depths.
  3. Faulty or badly soldered Trace Wire to Rod End connections also cause high resistance and limit current flow.
